Get students excited about math. Math Party!

I just had an idea that I believe could get students excited about math. Have a math party.

This is the premise, get all the math teachers in a school or department together. Have teachers challenge each other to problems in front of the classes, for the whole day, giving students a chance to view what real mathematics is all about. Let them see minds coming together, discussing, trying, failing, solving and triumphing.

The joy of true mathematics needs to be modeled for students so they can learn to appreciate work of the mind. If it catches on and your school understands, you could do it once a month or once a semester.

Allow students to bring problems to challenge the teachers and let the students join in on solving each others problems.

I will reflect on ideas and practices I learn through my formative years as a classroom math teacher.
